Some Thoughts On Senior Pictures And Why They Are So Special

We were sitting and talking with one of our high school seniors and her mom yesterday and it was a conversation I really enjoyed – one that got me thinking about our seniors and why their sessions are so special.

Special

We have had parents thank us before for “making it such a great experience” for their senior and “really capturing them” or “making them feel so special”.  Yes – we are really good at what we do.  Ally is an awesome photographer and she connects with people really well.

But here’s the thing, and I said this yesterday in what was a similar conversation to many we’ve had with comments like the ones above:

Special

Often the case is that we made someone’s daughter or son feel good NOT just because we said lots of things, complimented them and focused on them, but because the senior kicked butt.  At the end of the day the senior gets credit too.  It’s the senior who has to prep, dress, smile, pose – for hours!  It’s the senior who projects the confidence and the personality.

Special

Sure Our Approach is Key…

Take the girl who was here yesterday with her mom to place their order.  Did we have something to do with her having such an amazing session?  Well sure we did.  We meet with each senior ahead of time to get to know them.  We want to get a sense of what their style is, their personality – and we empower them to be involved in planning their session.  We know what questions to ask, we know tons of great locations, we have a great studio with perfect lighting, fantastic backdrops and really cool vintage furniture.  We’ve been at this a long time and it’s our livelihood, but we want them to know this is about them.  So yes this approach breaks down barriers and paves the way for a better session.  It’s really important, and once we’ve done it the senior can own their part.

Special

…But it’s a Team Effort & The Seniors Make It Special

It’s truly a collaboration.  No different than a coach and an athlete, a conductor and a classical musician.  The girl who was here yesterday really rose to the occasion.  SHE was what made it special.  She looked great!  You could see the fun she was having and the confidence on her face in the photos.  Ally laughs at how I always say the senior is “killing it” or “slaying the game” haha…  But that’s not B.S. – it’s true!  And with yesterday’s senior everyone brought their A game, everyone feels like we really accomplished something great together, and now we’re friends.  We can’t imagine the tedium of doing it any other way for something that can and should be so special and our clients come here because that’s what they want.

Special

So yes, we love what we do and we’re good at it, but it’s the team – us, the parents and the SENIORS that make senior pictures at Frameable Faces so special!

Marlee Is Marvelous and So Are The Highlights From Her Senior Session!

We got marvelous with Marlee because she IS.  She’s a legacy twice over here at Frameable Faces with both of her big bros coming here for their senior pics and we are big fans of the fam!  Meanwhile Marlee is adorable, smart and snarky so she fits in pretty well here!  Marlee’s mom Gayle joined us for a fine day here at the studio and on location in the WB for some, well, MAHHHVELOUS pics with Marlee!!!

Marlee Is Marvelous

We started on location for this one with Orchard Lake in the background…

Marvelous

LOVE IT.

Also you know how we roll – here’s the fun behind the scenes from the above photo from Facebook LIVE:

We hit a couple more spots around town including this meadow, and while we’re at it we need to shout out Farah at Mandy Rose Studio for hair and makeup – she did a great job with Marlee!

Marvelous

Beautiful.

And one more outside, and you can see a little of that Fall color coming in as we get up close with our girl…

Marvelous

At this point we headed back to the studio for a little glam on the black, and we have some more behind the scenes fun this time from Instagram:

And the MARVELOUS result:

Marvelous

A stunner to finish with!

We were getting marvelous with Marlee indeed – the end of an era with these guys and maybe they saved the best for last (?).  LOL – we hope you enjoyed the highlights of our day!

Twinning and Winning – Part 2 – We Are On The Shane Train!

In yesterday’s post Twinning and Winning – Part 1 – And We Ain’t Lyin’ About Ryann! we went all Ladies First with Ryann’s highlights with a twin pic of Ryann and Shane together mixed in.  Today we reverse it and get on the Shane Train!!!  Shane is a good dude and he was a trooper on these two days in Detroit taking all these pics with his sis!  We had a great time with these two and here are more of the highlights!

On The Shane Train

We’ll start with one of our favorite mosaic murals in Eastern Market:

Shane Train

Looking good!!!

Here’s one from Belle Isle with a pretty cool composition – an angle we hadn’t used before:

Shane Train

We posted a photo from the cool ivy wall we found in Detroit yesterday of Ryann, and here’s some behind the scenes of that spot from Facebook Live:

And a result with Shane:

Shane Train

Pretty cool huh?

We grabbed this black and white on the Wayne State campus – big fans of how this one turned out:

Shane Train

Our last spot was by a very cool sculpture – also a somewhat random find…  and here’s the behind the scenes from Instagram:

And we’ll leave you with one of those of the twins together!

Shane Train

Love them!

You can see why we weren’t lyin’ about Ryann yesterday and why we are on the Shane Train today!!!  We hope you enjoyed the highlights of our time with these two!!!

Twinning and Winning – Part 1 – And We Ain’t Lyin’ About Ryann!

What an epic senior session(s) odyssey we embarked on with twins Ryann and Shane!!!  In this post we’ll go ladies first – we love this girl and we ain’t lyin….about Ryann!!!  What a sweetheart and the two of them are pretty hilarious together we have to say.  Definitely a twin bond that you can feel.  We’re going to focus on some individual photos of Ryann here and some individuals of Shane tomorrow but with one together in each post.  These two are legacies too since we photographed older brother Ian from the class of 2019!

Twinning & Winning & ain’t lyin’ about Ryann…

We went to Detroit with these two – twice!  The plan with their parents Faith and John was to make sure we had plenty of opportunities to get as many pics as we needed in as many spots as necessary with some of them individually and some together.  We all felt that we didn’t want to be rushed, and this allowed us to break it up without going on a marathon day long shoot.  So you’ll see some photos mixed in here from both days!

Here’s a little behind the scenes to give you a taste of the first day in Eastern Market before we get to a few higlights from Facebook Live:

Now some highlights of Ryann’s pics!

Ryann

Just stunning!!!  We had a decent amount of wind at that point but it works to nice effect on Ryann’s hair above!  Lots of color in and around Eastern Market as well and Ryann Rocked it.  Here’s another one…

Ryann

Love the black on the black wall…

Here’s one from day two on a random ivy covered wall I just spotted as we were driving by…

Ryann

Love it.  That wall won’t be so random for us anymore!

And one more in this outfit on the Wayne State Campus which is really nice…

Ryann

Now let’s bring Shane into the picture (pun intended) for this fun twin pic:

Ryann

Awesome!!!  Twinning and winning indeed and you can see we weren’t lyin’ about Ryann!  We had so much fun with these two and we hope you enjoyed part 1 of the highlights!  Part two is the next post!

Kraving The Fall Feels With Katie On Her Senior Picture Session!

We’ve known Katie since she was born – heck her mom Kelly stood up in our wedding so we go way back with these guys and Katie was a spokesmodel for us this year for the Clarkston Wolves!  She’s nice, she’s smart, she’s pretty – she’s pretty much the whole package!  Our original plan got rained out so we broke this up into two days for studio and location, and what a location!  We headed up to Clarkston for a perfect afternoon with Katie and her parents Tim and Kelly at Independence Oaks County Park, so let’s get to the highlights!

Let’s start with one from the day at the studio on the simple white backdrop:
Katie
Love that – she looks adorable, and we have some behind the scenes from that day on Instagram:

Kraving the Fall Feels with Katie

Now let’s get to our amazing day on location for some beautiful lighting and fall colors!  We definitely would like to photograph at this park again sometime – what a beautiful place!

Katie

Just a simple close up with the water in the background…

We also have more behind the scenes this time from Facebook Live:

…and a couple of stunners to wrap this up:

Katie

How’s that for fall color?

Katie

She looks gorgeous in the meadow and that’s a great one to end this on.

All the Fall Feels indeed and we had a great time with Katie!!!  We hope you enjoyed the highlights of our day(s) with her!

We Were All In With Ari In Birmingham For Senior Pictures!

We’ve known Ari since he was in nursery school and he was our Tony’s “first friend” so it was pretty surreal to have him here at the studio as a grown up senior for his senior pictures!  We photographed his older brother and we love his mom Donna so we were excited for this one, and even his dad Gary came along on location to hang out!

All In With Ari

We focused on location photos so let’s start in downtown Birmingham:

Ari
Good lookin’ dude!

Of course we have some fun behind the scenes first from Facebook LIVE:

Let’s see a couple more…

Ari
Dope.

Ari

We also headed over to Quarton Lake to get a couple of pics in a natural setting and here’s some more behind the scenes this time with a nice vehicle they brought along on Instagram:

And we’ll leave you with just a nice simple natural pic of our guy!

Ari

And there you have it!  We were all in with Ari and we hope you enjoyed the highlights of our day with him!

A Livin’ The Dream With Alivia On An Awesome Senior Session!

Having opportunities to repeatedly photograph our faves makes for great days “on the job” so to speak.  It certainly doesn’t feel like work when you’ve got a sweetheart like Alivia back for another round with her delightful mom Rhonda!  Alivia is a spokesmodel for the class of 2020 representing Bloomfield Hills High School and her spokesmodel session rocked back in April, so we were excited for her senior session!

A Livin’ The Dream With Alivia…

We focused most of our energy on location starting with a lake backdrop…

A Livin
Gorgeous!

We also have some fun behind the scenes action first from the livestream we did on Instagram!

And one of the results…

A Livin

At this point we did a little relocation for a few more scenes and the awesomeness continued – Alivia killed it!

A Livin
Here’s another behind the scenes vid this time from Facebook LIVE:

And we’ll leave you with one more with a little off camera flash – love this one…

A Livin
Fantastic.

And there you have it – you can see that we were a livin’ the dream on this day with Alivia and we hope you enjoyed the highlights from her session!

Emma Elevates The Senior Picture Game In Detroit!

We love Emma.  She is just a burst of personality and total adorable-ness, and on top of that she’s clearly my spirit animal – we totally bonded over American history and that’s pretty much what we talked about while her mom Tara and Ally sat and watched during her consultation.  We decided we’re going to go for coffee and talk about history one day lol!  To that end, Emma had a plan for her love of books to be a part of her senior session and she had scoped out the venerable John K King Bookstore in Detroit as an essential locale in our plan – she even contacted the store where they were more than accommodating in letting us photograph there!  This turned out to be the beginning of an EPIC day that ended up at our fave Chili Mustard Onions for dinner!  So let’s get to what happened at the bookstore and more highlights in between as Emma Elevates the senior picture game!

Emma Elevates

John K King is a massive bookstore of used books that you MUST visit if you haven’t before.  Here’s the behind the scenes Facebook LIVE broadcast where you can tell how giddy we were about photographing there!

And one of the results…

Emma Elevates

How beautiful!  Emma looks amazing and it’s just such a cool photo that really captures a big part of who she is.

From there we headed over to Belle Isle where Emma and Tara had another great prop in store….

Emma Elevates

How fun is the bicycle and the flowers in the basket?  The sky opened up right after this photo with a blast of rain as we scurried back to the car to wait it out.  We just lucked out on that… it didn’t last long and it left behind a gorgeous rainbow in the sky.

We headed over to the edge of the island to get a skyline photo of Detroit and this one with the off-camera flash is awesome – it’s just more of Emma elevating…

Emma Elevates

Last but not least we headed over to Eastern Market for the murals and there’s a funny fruit mural Emma likes a lot so we used that one.  Here’s the behind the scenes from Instagram LIVE (including a “Tara takeover” where Tara took over the broadcast)!

And here is the fun result!

Emma Elevates
Adorable!!!

And there you have it! Emma Elevates indeed – she slayed on this day!  We hope you enjoyed the highlights of our day with her!
